Community Employment projects

The Glasnevin Core Group became sponsors of a Community Employment project for the first time in 1993. It was established to support the work in the parish and to assist the community. The main purpose of Community Employment is to give long term unemployed an opportunity to work and gain skills that will assist them to get employment when they finish on the project. It also is to assist work in the community by providing services. The funding for this work comes from the Department for Social Protection.

One of the main activities of the project is supporting Meals on Wheels in Glasnevin and surrounding parishes. There are two kitchens dedicated to Meals on Wheels one located in the Senior Citizen Complex in Botanic Avenue and one in the Senior Citizens Complex in Hampstead Court (behind Lady of Victories Church). There is also a Dinner Club located in St Peters Church in Phibsboro. In the last year those kitchens produced over 23,000 meals for the community. The meals are freshly cooked three course meals, mainly for the elderly. The cost of a three course meal is €2.00. The nature of the work experience and training obtained by the staff has led in the past to many of them taking up full or part time positions. 50% of the staff are employed as catering assistants preparing meals for the meals on wheels service. This involves preparing and cooking meat, vegetables, soups and desserts for large numbers of people. Participants are also required to serve meals in the centre and pack meals for distribution by drivers. In addition to this they must comply with very high standards of hygiene as laid down by the environmental health officers, who regularly inspect both kitchens. All catering assistant participants take part in the Primary Food Hygiene course provided by the Health Services Executive, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (H.A.C.C.P.).

Other works in the parish supported by the Project are grounds people in the Holy Faith Convent and Marian House. Also in Marian House we have catering staff. There are four people employed in St Peter's Church Phibsboro supporting that parish and we also have staff in Ballygall Community Centre and in the North Dublin National Schools Project on the Ballymun Rd. The CE project also assists local community groups with administration such as photocopying, preparation of mailing lists, notices, access to the internet and other admin work. In total the project employs 24 people. The project base office is located in the Parish Centre.
